  • 1782: In the will of his father, Nathan Center Sr., Nathan was bequeathed "one negro boy named Dick." See: Dick Center (bef.1782-)[1]
  • 1810 U.S. Federal Census: 13 slaves[2]
  • 1820 U.S. Federal Census: 20 slaves[3]
  • 1830 U.S. Federal Census: 25 slaves[4]
  • 1833: In the will of his neighbor, Col. Thomas Taylor Sr., written in 1832 and proved on 14 Dec 1833[5], Nathan Center was bequeathed two slaves: Dick Taylor and Joe Taylor "purchased by me at Sheriff sale for him."
  • 1840 U.S. Federal Census: 28 slaves[6]
  • 1850 U.S. Federal Census: Nathan Center (age 73) is listed as living with his son, Dr. James T. Center, in The District, Richland Co., South Carolina. Nathan Center is not listed as a slaveowner in the 1850 Slave Schedule, however his son, James, is shown as owning 13 slaves. Nathan Center died in 1850.
