This page enumerates the slavery history of Newton Paley Banks (1824-1901)

Newton lived in Macon County, AL in 1850, but it is uncertain if he owned any slaves at that time. He did own real estate worth 2240, but he is not listed on the 1850 Macon schedule.

In a book on family history, Newton was said to have built a log school-house on his property "for the negroes, probably the first built in Alabama after the war by an ex-slaveholder for the education of negroes." It is not clear if this was in Macon County or Russell County, Alabama, as he owned slaves in both these locations.
