On 25 Feb 1858, Elizabeth Powell, presumably an enslaved person in the Owen Glass household, age 16, gave birth to a daughter named Maria. Maria Carr's death certificate reported that her father's name was Robert Glass of Henderson, Kentucky. The only Robert Glass found in Henderson County in the 1850's is Robert, son of Owen Glass. Maria's mother is known to be Elizabeth Powell, who appeared in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses as mother-in-law in the household of James A. Carr and Maria Carr. In the 1850 census, Elizabeth Powell could be the person identified as 7 F B.

The will of Dr. Owen Glass was written on 21 Aug 1858 in Henderson, Kentucky, and proved on 23 Jan 1860. It included: To daughter Sarah Holloway Glass,

  • one Negro woman slave aged about twenty eight (28) years named Maria, valued $800 (daughter of Churity)[3]

Owen Glass died probably late in 1859. The 1860 slave schedule in Henderson, Kentucky of his widow Elizabeth Glass reported 13 enslaved people in 3 slave houses:
