Rachel Alston (Jones) Banks (1769-1851) was left an inheritance of ten slaves and one unnamed slave, along with land, upon the death of her husband, Ralph Banks (1757-1823), in 1823, through the Will that was recorded that year.
The names of 6 of these 11 slaves match or approximately match some of the 58 named slaves found in Ralph Banks' probate document of the same year. The other five do not seem to match names from the probate inventory of that year.
Ralph left to his wife Rachel:
- Johnson (bef.1805-) and his wife Fanny
- Fanny (bef.1805-)
- Milly (bef.1807-)
- Harry (bef.1805-)
- Webster (bef.1805-)
- Thompson (bef.1823-)
The following listed in the Will as being left to Rachel have no closely matching names in the probate inventory of the same year:
- Lett Peter and his unnamed wife
- Hannah (this Hannah named as "old" not a match for the child on probate document)
- Jenkins
- Nancy (there are several people named Nancy in the probate inventory)
Ralph left other slaves he had owned by name to four of his sons with Rachel: ****Slaves of Marion Banks, Alabama, Henry Banks (1804-1846), Lemuel Banks (1806-bef.1857), and Ralph Banks Jr. (1796-1871). The remainder were left to their other children.
Shortly after Ralph's death, Rachel moved to Tuscaloosa to be near daughters Sarah Banks Sims and Mary Banks Jones, as well as son Willis. Two other sons, Dunstan and Marion, moved there later. According to a living descendant in the Banks family, when she moved Rachel sold her inherited property and, presumably, her slaves to Nathaniel Banks (1799-1843), son of Joseph Banks and the nephew of Ralph. A source to confirm this sale has not yet been found.
