Inheritance

His aunt, Catherine Miller, left him her 'little boy Charley' in her will. [1]

Mortgage

In 1816, Nathaniel Greene mortgages slaves to Ray Sands. See Slaves of Nathaniel R Greene for more information

The Greene Family Group

In 1812 Ray purchased from Dr. Henry E Turner.[2] This group of slaves had been part of several prior transactions. See Slaves of Martha Greene Nightingale Turner for more information

In 1814 Ray Sands deeds this same group to Henry Sadler.[3] The group is the same except for the following:

On 1812 list but missing from 1814 list: Kitty
Only on 1814 list: Cudjo (this is a second Cudjo), Frank, Old Mary, and two women named Hetty

Also in 1814 (but not filed until 1820), Ray Sands gifts "1/2 interest" in the slave of Spring Plantation to Josiah Whitney of Boston:[4]

Jack, Hannah, Maria, Peggy, Lemas, Lucy, Jack, Will, Nancy, Stephen, Sarah, Harry, Jean, Cuffy, Isaac, Jon, Sally, Kitty, Billy, Frank, Caty, Jim, Phebe, Scipio, George, Jack, Monday, Nancy, Morris, Molly, Cooley, Cooper, Commissa, Peggy, Clarissa, Juba, Fama, Yama, Patty, Will, Nancy, Jane, Jacob, Phebe, Clarinda, Daphne, Aaron, Daphne, Rosette, Frank, Momma, Frederick, Cerak, Durah, Mary, Lydia, Peter, Moses, Dinah, Cesar, Charlotte, Abigail, Fanny, Harry, Milford, Tinah, Julius, Robin, Reno, Cudjo, Juba, Celessa, Mary, March, Tombo, Commissa, Phillis, Molly, Cudjo, Tom, Jim, Jim (2), Jack, Billy and Quash.

In 1816 a deed is filed that is giving partial interest, in a trust and dividing the slave from the previous group among three parties, namely, Ray Sands, Henry Sadler and Henry's wife, Mary Sadler. [5]The slaves were divided as follows

unto Mary Sadler: Jack, Hannah, Maria, Peggy, Lemas, Lucy, Jack, Will, Nancy, Stephen, Sarah, Harry, Jean, Cuffy, Isaac, Jon, Sally, Kitty, Billy, Frank, Caty, Jim, Phebe, Scipio, George, Jack, Monday, Nancy, Morris, Molly, Cooley, Cooper, Commissa, Peggy, Clarissa, Juba, Fama, Yama, Patty, Will, Nancy, Jane

The Sadler's deed their 1/2 interest in the 74 slaves above to Josiah Whitney in 1819. [6]

At this point it would seem that Ray no longer has any ownership of the above slaves. Yet several more transactions selling groups from above appear in the records. Again, some of these seem to be selling the same slaves several times.
