Research Notes

  1. 1830 and 1840 census records.
The 1830 and 1840 census records are spread over two pages. The automatically generated link in FamilySearch goes to the first page. To get to the second page you have to click on a link at the top of the census page. In the 1830 census record for Reuben Arnett, Sr. it looks like this: < Image 25 of 41>[20]. When the mouse pointer is hovered over the '<' symbol the word 'previous' appears, click on it to go to page 24. When the mouse pointer is hovered over the '>' symbol, the word 'next' appears, click on it to go to page 26.
The second page of the 1830 Morgan County, Kentucky [21] census record was transcribed incorrectly. For three households, the enslaved people listed on the second page (image 26 of this census record) have been accidentaly listed one line below the household they should actually be in. The household totals do not add up correctly. The following table illustrates the problem.
The slaves listed on line 10, Jacob Howerton's household, should actually be on line 9, Mason William's household. The William's household is supposed to have a total of 10 people, it only has 6. The Howerton household is supposed to have a total of 3 people, but adds up to 7 if the enslaved people on line 10 of the second page are included.
The same problem is on lines 12, 13 and 14. The households of Reuben Arnett, Mary Patrick and Ezekial Loggins. The enslaved people are accidentally listed one line below where they should be.

  1. The 1830 and 1840 census records use an age category of 10 to 23 years as the second column for enslaved people. This is a range of 15 years. Mary is in this category in 1830 and 1840. If her age is being reported correctly, this means that she is likely to have been born in the five year period from the beginning of 1816 to the end of 1820. The letter "B" stands for "Possbile Birth".

Thank you, I will be happy to explain how I did this. Short version: I use google sheets. If you are not familier with spreadsheets I will be happy to make sure to send an explanation with great detail or do a google meet with you where I can go over it with you live. If you do use spreadsheets then you will pick up what I did very quickly, let me know when I can contact you. I work at a school, so my weekends are usually free. I live in the Eastern US time zone. The live offer stands no matter your level of familiarity with spreadsheets.
