This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by Reuben Gilliam (1793-1858), and attempt to connect them to their families.

Slaves

  1. Emeline[1]
  2. Amand[a][1]
  3. Tom Johnson[2]
  4. Tom's mother Lucy Gilliam[2]

The recorded will of Reuben Gilliam names two specific enslaved "Negro girls" (Emeline and Amand) to be transferred to his two nephews (James and Thompson Govier, apparently enumerated with him in 1850), but advises his children to divide his remaining estate evenly without giving additional specifics.[1] The slave schedule of the 1850 census attributes 39 enslaved people to him; they are listed below.[3] [4]
