Slaves Mortgaged, Hall County, Georgia

The following enslaved people were taken as mortgage guarantee

26 Mar 1842 received the Barbers Mill Tract, and the following enslaved:[1]

On the 8 Apr 1843 - John Saye mortgaged property on the Oconee River and the following enslaved people (the same names as above, plus an 8 month old boy born to Maria, new since the previous document above) to Richard Banks with notes payable in 12 months, 2 years, 3 years:[2]

On the 2 Aug 1843 John Saye continued the same mortgage with Richard Banks (the same enslaved are again named)[3]

On the 2 Feb 1848 - Richard Banks may have indeed received all the property above from John Saye, as there was a sheriff sale document and Richard Banks was highest bidder on the John Saye property for $400.[4]

On the 18 Dec 1843 from James Armour a mortgage of land on Flat Creek and Walnut Fork, and the following enslaved people:[5]

7 Jan 1851 - Purchase of property and slaves from the estate of John Bell. The enslaved are not named in this deed. [6]

Narcissa and William Bell sold this property and slaves to Richard. (wife of John Bell, and son?) John Bell died 1850, wife Narcissa her death 1860. It was thought that this will for her is probably on Ancestry, (per Family search family tree notes) but it is not available on family Search, possibly his will is on Ancestry as well, however legal records for John Bell that might name the slaves mentioned above were not found by two USBH researchers.

26 Mar 1856 - From Ezekiel Bluffington, a mortgage, unknown if these enslaved were actually claimed by Richard Banks as he died in May of 1856.

  • Sale of property after death - 1870, to Ezekiel Buffington 400 acres[7]
