Richard's father died intestate in 1789, and Richard was named with his siblings as the heirs of six enslaved people: Dick, Hannah, Judy, Nancy, Simon & Cresey ^[1]

1837 Will of Richard Hampton

Richard's will was dated 24 July 1837 and was submitted for probate on 4 May 1840 in South Carolina. In his will, Richard identified that his negroes were to be equally divided between his heirs, although no details were provided.^[4]
