Slaves of Dr. Robert Martin in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Although I marked this page and Robert Martin's page with the category "needs slaves identified," likely most of them have been identified. But there are a few who are unaccounted for by name, and it would be great to figure them out, if possible.

In 1810, Robert's household included:

  • 7 white residents (1 male under 10, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 26-44, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female over 45.)
  • 7 enslaved people, no age ranges provided in this census year.

In 1820, Robert's household included:

  • 1 male age 10-15
  • 1 male age 45 and upwards
  • 1 female age 10-15
  • 1 female age 45 and upwards, 4 engaged in agriculture,
  • 1 male slave age 14-26,
  • 1 male slave age 26-45,
  • 2 female slaves age 14-26,
  • 2 female slaves age 26-45.
  • Total slaves: 6

In 1830, Robert's household included:

  • 1 male age 10-15,
  • 1 male age 60-70 (Robert)
  • 1 female age 60-70 (Amelia, Robert's wife)
  • 1 male slave under age 10
  • 2 male slaves 10-24,
  • 1 male slave 24-36,
  • 2 male slaves 36-55,
  • 2 female slaves under age 10,
  • 1 female slave age 10-24,
  • 1 female slave age 55-100.
  • Total slaves: 10

In 1840, he was recorded with:

  • 1 male age 70-80 (Robert)
  • 1 female age 70-80 (Amelia, Robert's wife)
  • 3 male slaves under age 10,
  • 1 male slaves age 36-55,
  • 1 male slave age 55-100,
  • 1 female slave under age 10,
  • 1 female slave age 10-24,
  • 1 female slave age 24-36,
  • 2 female slaves ages 55-100. (Delcie is probably one of these women. This likely includes a female over age 65, since she likely was the same female in 1830 who was over 55.)
  • Total slaves:10

It may be possible to use the above age information to match with the named individuals in Robert's will 2 years later, in 1842. There were a total of 10 slaves listed in 1840, but 11 were named in the will.

The following enslaved people were named in Robert's will and inventory: [1][2]
