Named

List of Slaves identified in Robert Owen's Will of 4 May 1850.[1] Each of these people would stay with his wife Mary until her death, unless she decided to release them to her children. If any of her children died without issue before Mary, the designated slaves would be shared equally with other named children or their children if they had died. Son Thomas E Owen predeceased his mother. His wife Mariah Louise (Hicks) Owen signed for reciept of the property willed to Thomas.

Research Notes

  • Be careful with mergiing slaves. Since Robert was sometimes giving away more than one person with the same name in the same document, it would be a mistake to merge these individuals.
  • It would seem that there should be a correlation between the individuals named in the 1850 appraisal (with age and gender information) and the 1850 Slave Schedule. Perhaps due to the age approximations being so impercise, a meaningful correlation could not be established.

The following assumptions were made:

  • Place of Birth for each slave was the location where the Will was signed: Chambers, Alabama. (In some cases this was later modified to correlate to where Robert Owen was living at the time.)
  • The birth dates of children listed are recorded as before the date of the signing of the Will: 4 May 1850
  • To account for the difference between adults and children, the birth dates of adults are recorded as before 15 years before the signing of the Will, thus 4 May 1835.
