Biography
Sally Pomfret (Smith) Downey was born in 1814 to parents Anne Beasley and Alexander Smith, on their Abram's Plains plantation in Granville County, North Carolina.
In 1829, Sally married her first cousin Samuel Smith Downey. They had one child, Anne Pomfret Alexander Smith (Downey) Davis, before Sally died in 1831.
Enslaved People Inherited in 1828
On 20 November 1827, Sally's grandmother Mary (Webb) Smith died and her will was probated in February 1828. Sally inherited an enslaved girl named Eliza who was 14 years old.
On 25 December 1827, Sally's father Alexander died without leaving a will. His estate was inventoried on 1 March 1828 and the people he enslaved were divided among his wife Anne and two daughters Sally Pomfret Smith and Anne Alexander Smith. Sally inherited 14 enslaved people from her father.

On 22 July 1828, Sally's sister Anne died (age 12) and the enslaved people she had inherited from their father were re-divided between Sally and her mother Anne. Sally inherited nine enslaved people from her sister.
