Last Will and Probate [1]
Samuel Lumpkin signed his Last Will and Testament on 10 February 1847, about six years before he passed. He named his second (and current) wife Lucy (Dupree) Lumpkin as Executor of his Will. Along with the bequests of land, money, and items, Samuel also bequeathed enslaved people to his wife and his children.
- To wife Lucy, who in 1844 brought with her some enslaved people from her previous husband's estate: Dick a Negro man and Edy his wife, Candis their child and her boy child. Aaron and Nancy, and a boy child. Sam and Charlotte, a woman. Luvica, a girl. Jack, a man and July, his wife. Cinda and child, who had been sold to L.M. Johnson. A Negro woman named Chaney.
- To daughter Calender: Charles, William, Hester, Lina.
- To son George: Amos, John, Alley, Florah.
- To daughter Lena: Henry, Moses, Henryetta, Naomy, (and Charles and Winney after paying).
- To son Joseph: Negro boy named Lant.
- Judy and Dinah "to go with whom they will".
Samuel's Will (1847) has minimal information about the enslaved people. Additional documents within the probate file may have some information about them six years later (1853).
- Enslaved ancestors named in the probate records 1853-1856, not in Samuel's Last Will: Elbert a man, George a man, Lewis a man and his family; Jim a boy, Jeff a boy, Smith a boy, Little Lewis a boy, Hannah an old woman, Lucinday & child.
Note: Profiles have been created for the 42 Enslaved Ancestors identified above, names found in Samuel Lumpkin's Last Will (1847) and in the probate documents (1854).
