This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by Samuel Thompson, and attempt to connect them to their families.

Samuel Thompson owned at least two plantations on the island of St. Croix in the Danish West Indies. One, Mount Stewart Estate, later became the responsibility of his younger brother Robert Stewart Thompson. The other, Betty's Hope Estate, was his primary estate, and was administered by his heirs after his death.

There were hundreds of enslaved people named in the land records of these estates. There were also slaves specifically named in Samuel and Anne's joint Will, who were originally part of Anne's household with her first husband. The Will is also the only source that gives any sort of familial relationships.

Slaves Recorded at Bettys Hope Estate

The annual Land Tax Records for the various plantations included the names of all of the slaves on the estates. Some records include ages, or even specific birth and death dates. Those whose births could be established through the tax records are included in several tables here. Please see the Betty's Hope Estate page for more specific information on the people enslaved there.

Note also that his plantation, called Betty's Hope, was not the famous one on the island of Antigua, but a smaller one in the Prince's Quarter, on St Croix.

NB: This was origially a "working" spreadsheet. The header labels "First appears in" and "Last appears in" refer to the Land Tax Record years.
