Slaves of Stephen and Sarah Winchester, Tennessee

The purpose of this page is to document and identify the people enslaved by Stephen Winchester (1761-1815) and Sarah (Howard) Winchester (1775-1844) in Sumner County to assist in connecting those people to their families.

1844 Petion for Sale

Stephen Winchester died in 1815 but his wife Sarah died in 1844. In December, 1844, their children and grandchildren petitioned the court to allow for the sale of the people enslaved. The petition also identified that Sarah and her husband received four slaves from her father Joshua Howard and appears to imply that these were the descendants of those original gift of trust. It also identified that their daughter, Rebecca Beck had taken posession of one person, which she subsequently sold. Samuel H Lauderdale, husband of their daughter Mary, was assigned as receiver to take posession and hire out the same until July 1845.[1]
