In the Federal Census Slave Schedule in Coffee, Alabama in 1860, 39 unnamed slaves all listed by gender and age (ranging in age from ages 4 to 55) are enumerated.[2] According to a study of the distribution of enslaved people in Coffee County, during the year (1860) that Thomas appears as an enslaver on the state census, of 376 enslavers in this county Thomas owned by far the highest number of slaves next to only one other man (who owned 41). [3] And, Thomas during this same year enslaved others in Russell County, Alabama.
