Slaves of Thomas Lawson (1724-1796) of Hampshire, Virginia

Deed of Emancipation dated 18 Oct 1794, proved 10 Dec 1794: "These presents certify that for value received, I set my black woman free, called Margaret. And she shall forever remain free from me and my heirs, as witness my hand and seal the 18th day of October 1794. Thomas Loging [sic], Hannah Loging [sic]. Witness Present: Daniel Jones, Israel Stallcoss.

At a court held for Hampshire County the 10th day of December 1794 this Deed of Emancipation was proved by the oath of Daniel Jones, one the the witnesses thereto and is ordered to be recorded. Test, And. Wodrow C:C”^[1]

Document of Emancipation dated 29 Oct 1794, proved 15 Feb 1796. "These are to certify to all whom it may concern that Negro Monday and Negro Clem formerly the property of the Subscriber is from this time forth free Negroes from me and my heirs, it being for value received of the said Negroes by the Subscriber. Given under my hand this twenty ninth day of October one thousand seven hundred and ninety four. Thos. Lawson T his mark. Witness present John Newman, Margaret Newman.
