Research Notes
This is extracted from correspondence dated April 2022. This was shared with descendants of the enslaved Winstons. Opinions of Karen Allman:
Note, in the will of Thomas Johnson Winston drafted in 1855 he has the following item:
2nd I give to my beloved wife Susan, the following Slaves in fee simple. To wit, Old Peter, James, Lotty and her son Johnson, Cherry and her son, Ellick, Nimrod, Caroline together with all her present and future increase, Barbara together with all her present and future increase. Those slaves came by her, and I wish her to have them again to dispose of as she may desire.
There was a record I viewed of a Peter Winston who died in 1870. Knowing that Peter in the GIlliam was a man rather than a boy, leads me to the conclusion that the person in the will was the one that passed away.
...Barbara, what do we make of this person? Is this the same person we see in multiple variations over the census years, as the person who is the wife of Peter Winston AKA Tinsley? By her inclusion in the group being returned to Susan Cade Alford, and not originally named in her distribution, the inference I draw is that she is a daughter of one of the women in the distribution of 1821.
