Migration to Arkansas

According to the history of Hazen, Arkansas, Dr William Cogswell Hazen moved his family and twenty-one slaves from Covington in Tipton County, Tennessee to Prairie County in 1854. He would build cabins for the family and the slaves and begin a cotton plantation.[2]

Civil War Years

When the Union Army captured De Valls Bluff, Hazen moved his family and slaves to Texas where many of the slaves would worked making clothes and shoes for the Confederate Army. After his wife's death in Texas, Hazen would return to Arkansas with most of the slaves leaving him in Little Rock.[2]
