In November 1849, William was appointed as the new legal guardian for his nephew James Lewis Adrien Webb due to the previous deaths of two of William's brothers: James's father John Pomfret Webb in May 1846, and James's first legal guardian Alexander Smith Webb in June 1849. William submitted a guardian's report to the court in Maury County, Tennessee, in 1851 which listed the names and ages of the enslaved people inherited by James from his father's estate.[5]

Research Notes

  • Because the 1840 estate division of William's mother lists two enslaved people named Jack, with no additional information, I have been unable to determine which one is the Jack listed on the 1827 estate inventory of Ann's husband James Webb.[6] [7]
