History of William John Bailey

William was born in 1807 in Georgia. He was the son of John Bailey Jr. (abt.1790-1812), and nephew of General William Bailey, who served in the Florida Mounted Volunteers during the Seminole war, and was noted for his bravery.[1]

William married Eliza A. Bellamy, widow of Abraham Melton Bellamy (1800-1839), on 22 January 1844 in Jefferson, Florida, United States.[2]

By 1850, William had built Lyndhurst Plantation, near Ashville and not far from Monticello, Jefferson County, Florida.[1] The plantation contained 6700 acres.[3]

Most likely, this was William's uncle, General William Bailey, who owned The Cedars, and other properties. One had 188 slaves[6], a second had 84 slaves [7], and a third listed 58.[8]

In the 1860 census a William Bailey was in Jefferson, Florida, United States, with 90 slaves on one entry[9], and 185 in a second entry.[10]
