Slaves of William Mayo
This page's purpose is to record the enslaved people owned by William Mayo (1684-1744), and attempt to connect them to their families.
1727 Deeds with Daniel Stover
On the 27 October 1727, in Goochland Co., William made two separate purchases of enslaved people from Daniel Stover, also a planter in the county (8 in total, for £25). Less than a month later, on 13 November 1727, he sold them all back to Stover for 15 shillings.[1]
First Transaction: From Stover to Mayo, all purchased for £15[2]

1732 Deed to Anne Mayo
On 26 June 1732, in a Goochland Co., Deed, William gave his daughter Anna "six negroes which he hath at his plantation at Willis River allias Willis's Creek."[4]

1737 Deed from Thomas Dickins
In a land deed for 40 acres in King William Parish on the James River from a Thomas Dickins, Mayo also purchased:[5]

1737 Amelia Co., Thithables
Mayo is listed in the 1737 Amelia Co., thitables for his property there (above Half Creek), along with two slaves:[6]
- Cudgeo (named in 1744 will, bequeathed to Mayo's wife Ann)
- Pompys (may be the same man as Pompey, named in 1744 will, also willed to Mayo's wife)
1739 Deed to Joseph and Sarah Scott
On May 15, 1739, Amelia Co. Deed, William deeded to his daughter Sarah and her husband Joseph 1600 acres of land in Amelia Co. along with two female slaves:[7]

33 individuals named in his will (two were also named in earlier records). Organized by who he willed them to[8]
