Overview

William appeared with slaves in the 1850-1860 slave schedules, see below. In 1870, he lived near Lewis Basey,^[1] a black man, and in Lewis' 1881 will, he named William as his executor. Possibly they were friends, and/or possibly Lewis had been his slave, or a relative's slave, at some point. Lewis was 50 in 1870, so about 60 at the time of his will; that age doesn't match up well to any of the below censuses. But perhaps Lewis was at another location nearby in 1860, and the 30-year old female on that census was Peggie Basey, and the children were Peggie and Lewis'. (the children are named in Lewis' will).
