Outcome

In the 1860 census [5] Mary (born in Virginia) was living in Batavia Township, Clermont, Ohio with her three children, Malinda (age 12), William (age 11) and "Octave" [SIC] (age 9). In the hand-written census it appears that all are listed as mulatto; however, in the transcript Mary and daughter Milinda are listed as white. Also living in the household was Sara Stratten servant and her 2-year old daughter, Ida May. By Mary's name, in the column for value of estate, is says $100,000. In the 1870 census [6] Mary is living in Ohio with the three children of William and a young daughter Mary (age 9) born in Ohio, also carrying the name Zeigler. In this census all are listed as mulatto.
