This page describes the various slaves that William Zieigler held.
Slaves Received From Father
In a 4 February 1820 deed from his father Nicholas Zieigler, William Zeigler was gifted the following:
State of South Carolina.
Know all men by these presents that I Nicholas Zeigler in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my son William Zeigler and also for divers other good causes and considerations me thereunto moving have given and granted and confirmed and by these presents do give grant and confirm unto my said son William Zeigler the following Negro slaves to wit Sy and Phebe being two in number to have & to hold the said negro slaves unto my said William Zeigler his heirs and assigns forever from and after the day on which my said son shall attain the age of twenty-one years or from and after the day on which I shall or may if I think proper make final delivery of the said son before he attains the age of twenty-one years. Or from and after the day of my death If I should die before my said son shall attain the age of twenty-one years, or until I shall or may a final delivery of the said Negro slaves to my said son before he attains the age of twenty-one years. 1830 U.S. Census
The 1830 Crawford County, GA Federal census lists Wm. Zeigler with another male and 25 slaves.[2]

1840 U.S. Census
In 1840, Wm. had 66 slaves of which 26 were under the age of ten (thirteen boys and thirteen girls). 35 of the teenagers and adults were "employed in agriculture." The other five were presumably house servants. Mr. Zeigler was the only free white person counted in the household.[3]

Will of William Zeigler
In the will of William Zeigler, John his nephew is bequethed five slaves making up a single family, "I give devise and bequeath unto my beloved Nephew John W. Dent the following described family of Negroes to wit -- Sampson and his Wife Hannah & their children Julia, Tom, & Nathan & their Increase forever ..."
In the same will, the executors, are instructed
- (1) my slave woman Mary should choose her own trustee and 2) should slaves be sold upon my death, they be sold as family groups
Finally, the executors, including John, are given instructions on the care of another slave family as follows:
- "Is my desire, and so I direct, that the colored children of my Woman Slave Mary, be taken to a state where the laws thereof will tolerate their Manumission, or freedom & that they be there put under Competent and proper Teachers Keeping them together if possible where they may be properly educated according to the Means hereinafter set forth. That they be provided with good & suitable board and lodging having an Eye in this as with selection of Teachers, to Strict Morality, also that they be properly Clothed. And in respect to the said William Henry] -- it is my will and desire and so I direct my Executors to do that he shall receive a good Collegiate Education fiting him for any Profession he may choose & I, wish him to be allowed when he attains to the age of discretion and is qualified so to do to choose his profession, and that this & the next Item may be faithfully and effectually caused -- I hereby Nominate appoint and depute my beloved Brother Henry Zeigler Guardian of the person of Malinda Ann and my Nephew John W. Dent guardian of the person of William Henry and my Brother Lewis Zeigler guardian of the person of Octavius."
Outcome
In the 1860 census [5] Mary (born in Virginia) was living in Batavia Township, Clermont, Ohio with her three children, Malinda (age 12), William (age 11) and "Octave" [SIC] (age 9). In the hand-written census it appears that all are listed as mulatto; however, in the transcript Mary and daughter Milinda are listed as white. Also living in the household was Sara Stratten servant and her 2-year old daughter, Ida May. By Mary's name, in the column for value of estate, is says $100,000. In the 1870 census [6] Mary is living in Ohio with the three children of William and a young daughter Mary (age 9) born in Ohio, also carrying the name Zeigler. In this census all are listed as mulatto.
