Introduction

This page lists the named and unnamed slaves of Winnifred Dunn of Columbia County, Georgia.

See: Will of Winnifred Dunn Columbia County Georgia 1836

Her will included the following item:

Fifthly I give and bequeath in the whole rest and residue of my Estate whether real or personal to be equally divided between my daughter Eliza Kinnebrew, Alfred Dunn and the children of Waters Dunn; also the portion that falls to the lot of my son Alfred Dunn to be divided at his death amongst his children.

Note there is a provision that Elizabeth is to receive a girl named Render. No other item references those she enslaved. Only those in the paragraph above were to inherit those she enslaved.

Named

Inherited from Husband's Estate

From Waters Dunn JR in his will (Annetty born after the will) per 1808 appraisal
Polley (and her child Cicero)
Cicero
Annetty (with mother Polly)
Ralph
William

Cicero is not shown in the probate records for Winny. There is a boy Cicero, but not this man at the time of her probate. There is a man Cicero who is in the probate records of Winny's son Waters M Dunn. He bequeathes Cicero to his wife Mary Dunn. The widowed Mary goes on to marry William Copeland. In William's will, Cicero is given to Mary outright. Other named enslaved persons are lent to her under certain conditions and are then to pass to his children. In context, it appears Cicero is being returned to her, and that he had been enslaved by her prior to her marriage to William.

Other Probate Records

Paging forward over the next few images is the sales of the property in Winniferd's estate. This does not include the sales of any enslaved persons.

Columbia County, Georgia, Probate records:

Book DD, page 320, 23 Jan 1838, accounting for the estate for 1837, on the following image are details of hiring of 28 enslaved persons for one month in 1837.

Note the hiring out of the enslaved for one month in 1837 seems to correlate with many of the enslaved being distributed in February, as found in the book of Deeds and Mortgages (shown above), where Alfred J Dunn and Eliza (Dunn) Kinnebrew signed receipts for the enslaved people the inherited from their mother's estate. Perhaps those hired out in the other time frames were the enslaved to be passed to the children of Waters M Dunn when they came of age.

Note many of the children of Waters Dunn Jr and wife Winny died before Winny did. Looking through the names of the enslaved in the estate records, it looks like in many cases the above named persons will appear in subsequent probate records. With that in mind, the children are listed here in the order they passed away.
