Slaves of the Thomas Redd Family in Harrison County, Kentucky

The purpose of this page is to record the enslaved people owned by Thomas Redd, and attempt to connect them to their families. This page is a collaborative work-in-progress. Can you contribute information or sources? Care is being taken to bring these lines forward, but mistakes are inevitable. Researchers are encouraged to reverify (and add source) information; making adjustments to profiles as necessary. If you are a descendant of these families, and can contribute oral history that has been passed down your line, please add that under the research notes or send a message to the profile manager. Working together we can recover this history.

Thomas Redd's slave records found to date include the 1830 and 1840 census,[1][2] his will,[3] and the estate inventory.[4] He owned no slaves in 1810 or 1820. No slaves were listed in his estate sale.

Thomas Redd died in 1847. The only slaves specified in his will were Eunice and Daniel, which he bequeathed to his wife Elizabeth. The inventory of his estate listed three others in addition to Nicy and Daniel: Ned, Franky and Reuben.

Since no slaves were listed in the estate sale of Thomas Redd's property, there is some possibility that between 1840 (8 total) and 1847 (5 total), Thomas may have begun to disperse his slaves to his children. This may also have occurred with Franky, Ned, and Reuben, who were not specified in his will. Since not all research has been completed on the children of Thomas Redd as yet, their slave records (with his widow's) are being added here for reference.

Including the slaves of Thomas Redd, these tables cover a total of:

9 individuals in 1840: 2 households: Thomas Redd (8), Alex Redd (1). Thomas's inventory (1847) lists only 5.
12 individuals in 1850: 7 households: 2 males from 1840 not accounted for. 1 new adult female and 4 new children: James Redd (3), William Redd (1), John T. Barnes (1).
13 individuals in 1860: 4 households: 7 from 1850 unaccounted for. 1 new adult female and 7 new children: Alex Redd (2), James Redd (1), John T. Barnes (5).
  • 2 slave children have been found recorded for the Redd family group in KY vital statistics records, one male under William Redd in 1857 and one female under J.T. Barnes in 1859, both listed as black. Neither of these children appear to be accounted for in the 1860 census slave schedule.

Research Notes

  • Surname spelling: surname spellings in the general Redd family group often include Reed or Read. Generally, the records here seem internally consistent (based on similar neighbors and family/slave groupings). However, the Reed family group in the Harrison County area has not yet been researched, and their relationship, if any, is not known. That research will need to be done for verification.
    • The 1870 census records the following seven people listed as black or mulatto with the surname Reed: Jane Reed,[19] Washington Reed,[20] Mary Reed,[21] Daniel Reed,[22] Kattie Reed,[23] Mary Reed,[24] and Mary Reed.[25] Preliminary research indicates these people may have been enslaved by Abigail Reed and her family. There does not appear to be any direct connection to the Redd family. However, further research is needed.
  • The table analysis is meant as a research aid in pinpointing possible names and dates to research for further records. Few conclusions on slave identities can be drawn at this point. wip tables: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zw42tte6UWQE2ChDc_3_DLigj9af-v5raRzlvEVR3lU/edit#gid=0
  • 1870 and later individuals who have connections to this general group and may be one of the unidentified: Reuben Burr, Alsie (Unknown) Burr.
  • Only one slave birth and no slave deaths between 1852 and 1860 are recorded under Redd slave owners in Harrison County. One slave birth has been found for JT Barnes, but Barnes and Rutledge have not been thoroughly checked. Neither of the two individuals found correspond with the 1860 census slave schedules, with the exception that the mother Ann in John T. Barnes birth entry of an unnamed female, would fit with the female age 34 in Barnes's 1860 record. Are there 2 Anns, or are they the same person?
