8 Memorials, all in 1777
Located immediately on the side of the road partially in front of the lot of the residence at 252 School Street, this small, 4 square-rod burial ground sits in a wooded area. It is defined by a low fence comprised of granite posts supporting 2 parallel iron rails. The interior lacks plantings except for a single large tree. The only standing marker is a 4 foot-high, 2 1/2-foot-square, rock-faced, granite monument whose polished side faces the street.
The inscription reads:
In Memory of those who died of Small Pox 1777. Jeremiah Hardy, May 29 Mary, the wife of Dea. Timothy Hardy, June 21 Abner & Elizabeth, son & dau. of Jeremiah Hardy, June 22 William Greenough, Esq. June 23 Dr. John Tenney, June 24 Dea. Timothy Hardy, June 27 David Marden, June 28 Erected by the Town of Groveland. 1896
By the late nineteenth century, the site had become so overgrown as to be lost to observation. It was also noted that except for the foot stone at the grave of William Greenough all the slate markers had "crumbled". In 1894, a committee was appointed by the town to consider the creation of a memorial over the graves.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as GRV.801 Groveland Small Pox Burial Ground.
This cemetery is referred to as GR3 Burial Place of the small pox victims, at East Bradford, afterwards Groveland in the "Vital Records of Bradford Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849".
