About the Project
The Smitherman/Smotherman Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Smitherman and Smotherman name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Smitherman/Smotherman name.
As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (Alabama or Texas Smitherman/Smotherman's), by time period (18th Century Smitherman/Smotherman's), or by topic (Smitherman/Smotherman DNA, Occupations, Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

- Unsourced Profiles: These profiles needs sources. Be wary of using family tree's as your only source. If you have access to the family tree you are sourcing, instead try to find the sources used to create that family tree. Find a grave is helpful, but do research outside of Find a grave. This is most important when there is no photo of the grave stone on Find a grave.
- Orphaned Profiles: These profiles have no profile manager and need someone to care for their profile.
- Unconnected Profiles: These profiles are not yet connected to the larger tree.
