This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

Task List

  • To identify and address orphaned profiles attached to the Soden surname that need improvement:

  • To identify the emigrant and immigrant Soden ancestors and their country of origin and destination.
  • To relate migratory paths in the United States by Soden families.
  • Should we add Sowden as a name variant? relates Sowden as English: variant of Soden.

Source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press. Many of the Sowden names appear to originate in Yorkshire and Cornwall England.

Ongoing research, including the review of many posted Soden variants family trees as well as current Soden geographical census locations, suggests that the majority of Sodens in the global community have paternal Soden roots back to the Midlands of England at least to the 1500s.

Warwickshire appears to be a continuing home for many Sodens, suggesting that the area of Leicestershire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire might have the the most recent geographical location for the origins of the Soden families disbursed throughout the world today. Research of the Soden surname and variants in England inevitably trace to the Midlands area in early records that are available.

John Voorhis Soden's 1914 book "Caleb Soden and his Ancestors" relates research that In his "Monograph of the Soden Family", Frhr. Julius von Soden, of Stuttgart, Germany, that "The Sowdan's, Sodon's and Soden's of England and Ireland, are doubtless descendants of those of the name in Germany,...." that "the first positive record found of the name in England, appears in the Deering Roll of Arms, containing a list of the Knights who accompanied King Richard I, of England at the Siege of Acre, in 1191. In this list is found the name of Stephen Sowdan,..."
