Styles

Most of the common style are active and living, with the latter evidenced by changes made in the approach from time to time. Examples of changes include ....

Preferred Style

See "WikiTree Help:Sources Style Guide" for "There are a number of common styles used for citing material and creating bibliographies ... On WikiTree the preferred style is the Evidence Explained format ..., based on the Chicago Manual of Style (CMoS) ... This is the ideal. Almost no profiles are perfectly sourced."

Elizabeth Shown Mills (see American Society of Genealogists). Her latest work, Evidence Explained (2015; almost 900 pages), is dedicated to sourcing for genealogists. While she covers a lot of U. S. centric sources, her approach to understanding the nuances of genealogical citations is universal. Her approach is more specific, but generally based on Turabian Style (Wikipedia) and Chicago Manual of Style (Wikipedia).

See Chicago Manual of Style, "Notes and Bibliography: Sample Citations"; you can even subscribe to Chicago Manual of Style Online ($44 annual as of July 2024),

a. "Notes" refers to formatting the reference in "footnote" format (WikiTree's "in-line citation"). The practice of applying full detail the first time a source is referenced in a work, and then applying less detail (a short note) in subsequent appearance. (For a variety of reasons, I don't use short notes on WikiTree.)
b. "Bibliography" refers to the formatting of a citation found in a source list (often called a bibliography). These sources are commonly organized in some order--alphabetical, geographical, perhaps date order.

Popular Styles

  • CMOS aka Chicago (Chicago Manual of Style); see Wikipedia.
  • Turabian (Kate L. Turabian); see Wikipedia.
  • MLA (Modern Language Association); see Wikipedia.
  • APA (American Psychological Association); see Wikipedia.
  • Harvard Referencing; see Wikipedia.

Citation Elements: Building Blocks

Citation Elements are the building blocks of citations. There are probably hundreds of elements. Examples of some common citation elements are,

  • Author/Compiler/Transcriber/Contributor/Editor
    • Editor; placement varies, depending on different factors; I now try to place the editor's name after the title. If there is no author, I will sometime place the editors name in place of the author. I'm not very consistent ...
  • Title of Book/Document/Article/Chapter/Film/Database, etc.
  • Edition--if other than the first edition, put the edition number after the title.
  • Date/Publication Date/Creation Date/Record Date/Recorded Date/Enumeration Date/Filing Date
  • Publication Place
  • Publisher
  • Date; Year
  • Access Date
  • Volume/Folio/Publication Number
  • Page/Filmed Page/Image Number
  • Film/Film Number; Roll/Roll Number
  • Collection Name; Collection Number; Call Number
  • Census Place
  • Enumeration District
  • Dwelling Number; Family Number; Line Number
  • Box Name ; Box Number
  • Entry/Item of interest
  • Format
  • Website Name
  • "Path"
  • URL
  • Repository--Repository Name; Repository Location
  • Source of the Source
  • Editorial Notes

A note about Links. URL links can be exposed or embedded. On WikiTree, the latter relies on WikiMedia coding (like "[URL NamedSite]"), which produces a link like Chicago Manual of Style. Also

(a) Often folks find material behind a paywall. When I work on early New England profiles, for example, I'm frequently citing modern journal articles published in The Register, and I will note in the reference that accessing my link requires a subscription.
(b) If the material I am referencing is believed to be in the public domain, I will often work to find that material freely available online, and use the link to source from that site.

Notes/Bibliography vs Author/Date

Basic Notes/Bibliography

Notes--Specific to Broad = John T. Hassam, The Hassam Family (Boston, 1870), 4, 5 (2. William); digital images, HathiTrust.

Bibliography--Broad to Specific; Commonly Alphabetical = Hassam, John T., The Hassam Family, Boston: 1870. HathiTrust.

Basic Author Date-- [WIP]

My Basic Templates

Records, like vital records, church records, deeds, tax records, etc., might be available in different forms. For example, a deed is a type of government record. We might access the deed in a form that originated in a government archive, but that same deed might have been transcribed and published in a book or series. It might have been transcribed and published on a website, blog or message board, with or without an accompanying digital image and/or with or without a proper reference (source of the source).

Basic Templates

  • Book--Author, Title (publisher location, publisher, published date), page (item, if appropriate).
  • Book with online access--Author, Title (publisher location, publisher, published date), page (item, if appropriate); digital images, [link OnlinePublisher].
