Communities of South-Western Kent

The earliest records of Hucksteps in Kent are from the village of Tenterden in the 16th century. Tenterden is not far from Rye and Iden, which are located in Sussex. A little later we find Hucksteps in Hawkhurst, which is close to Tenterden but also to Rye and Iden.

The Huckstep community in this area does not seem to have persisted as long as in some other parts of England.

Hucksteps in South-West Kent

Descendants of Lawrence Huckstep and Joan Pope

First generation

Lawrence and Joan

Lawrence Huckstep and Joan Pope were married on 17 August 1546 in Tenterden. Their children were christened in Tenterden and included:

• Edward Hucstepe, 21 February 1551/2, who married Alice Smyght in 1578; see Edward Huckstep and Alice Smyght
• John Hucstepe, 15 January 1553/4
• Denise Hucstepe, 10 August 1555

Lawrence must have died before 1560, as Joan was listed as a widow in 1560 when she remarried and became Joan Holneste.

Second generation

Edward and Alice

Edward Hucstepe, son of Lawrence Huckstep and Joan Pope, married Alice Smyght in Tenterden on 01 December 1578. Their children, baptised in Tenterden, included

• Margaret Hucsteppe, 21 June 1579
• Alice Hucsteppe, 10 July 1580
• John Hucsteppe, 18 June 1581
• Thomas Hucsteppe, 19 November 1582
• Mary Hucstepe, 09 August 1584
• Susan Hucsteppe, 29 September 1588
• Joan Hucsteppe, 18 October 1590, who married Phillip Bromell in Tenterden in 1611

Edward died early in 1591 and was buried in Tenterden. Alice survived another 4 years, dying in the summer of 1595.

First generation

Stephen Huckstep and Winifred Hatch were married in Tenterden in 1584. Their children, baptised in Tenterden, include:

• Thomas Hucsteppe, 22 November 1584; Thomas married Marie Reeve in Tenterden in 1611; see Thomas and Marie
• John Hucsteppe, 22 May 1586
• Lydia Huckstepe, 11 February 1588
• Mary Ann Huckstep, 24 September 1592

Winifred (also known as Winnifreth) died in 1592 in Tenterden

Second generation

Thomas Hucsteppe and Marie Reeve were married in Tenterden in 1611. Their children, baptised in Tenterden, included:

• Martha Hucstepp, 25 September 1614
• Marie Hucstepp, 24 November 1616
• John Huckstepp, 29 October 1620
• Walter Hucstep, 10 February 1621/22
• Judith Huckstep, 26 October 1623
• Lydia Huckstepp, 26 October 1625
• Samuel Huckstep, 16 September 1627, but died in 1629
• Winefrith Huckstep, 19 April 1629, but died in 1630
• Samuel Huckstepp, 27 February 1630/31
• Edward Huckstepp, 21 April 1633
• Winifred Houcksted, 03 December 1634. Winifred married William Ellis in 1667.

Marie died whilst giving birth to Winifred.
