The links in the table above are for the "landing level" categories (where people profiles should be categorized; project pages are categorized under Category: Appalachia Project).

Contents

South Central Appalachia Counties

Thirteen states have counties in Appalachia. The South Central Appalachia Team covers counties in three of them: North Carolina, Tennessee, & Virginia (the orange area in the above map). Out of 423 Appalachia counties, the following 87 counties and 7 Independent Cities are in the South Central Appalachia Region.
The state links in the following are to the table in Counties of Appalachia, where you'll find links to WikiTree's category pages for the counties and Independent Cities listed:
  • North Carolina (31 out of 31): Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Davie, Forsyth, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, McDowell, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Stokes, Surry, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, Yadkin, and Yancey[1]
  • Tennessee (38 out of 52): Bledsoe, Blount, Bradley, Cannon, Carter, Cocke, Coffee, Cumberland, De Kalb, Franklin, Greene, Grundy, Hamblen, Hamilton, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Lawrence, Lewis, Loudon, McMinn, Marion, Meigs, Monroe, Polk, Putnam, Rhea, Roane, Sequatchie, Sevier, Smith, Sullivan, Unicoi, Van Buren, Warren, Washington, and White[2][3]
  • Virginia (18 out of 25): Alleghany, Bath, Bland, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Henry, Highland, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Rockbridge, Smyth, Washington, and Wythe[2]
    • Virginia Independent Cities - a separate table following the Virginia Counties table (7 out 8): Bristol (Washington County), Buena Vista (Rockbridge County), Covington (Alleghany County), Galax (Carroll County), Lexington (Rockbridge County), Martinsville (Henry County), and Radford (Montgomery County)[4]
Note - although counties are shown, Virginia's Independent Cities are just that - independent of (and equal to) Virginia's Counties.[5]
    • Historic Counties... coming soon
When adding the appropriate Appalachians category, add any appropriate county-level location categories too. If working on pre-USA profiles, be aware that North Carolina and Virginia are part of the US Southern Colonies Project, which has guidelines for locations. See the Datafield Guide section of the US Southern Colonies Project Editing Guidance for specifics about pre-USA locations.

For instance, if someone was born in Augusta County, Colony of Virginia in 1750, married in Botetourt County in 1770, and died in Fincastle County in 1775, add

even though only Botetourt County is listed as one of today's 423 Appalacian counties by the Appalachian Regional Commision.[1] Fincastle County went extinct in 1776, and what remains of the once vast Augusta County is not in the Appalachian Region.[6]

South Central Appalachia Team To-Dos

Profile Maintenance: Project members are asked to help work on profiles in the project's Maintenance Categories. Note that if you add a maintenance category, you should generally also add details of why you added it to the profile's Research Notes.

Needs categories can be added to a profile using the project sticker (see this template page), including Appalachia, Needs More Records for a profile that has at least one source but needs additional sources.
Profiles for Appalachians with no sources should have Appalachia added to the profile, which will put the profile in the project's Unsourced Profiles category: Appalachia, Unsourced Profiles.

Tasks

Team members - if you're working on a listed task, please "sign" it by adding ~~~~
  • Looking for work? Check out the table of South Central Appalachia County space pages at Workspace for Appalachia Project - Tennessee & see if one of the red counties is one you have an interest in (red means a space page for the county does not yet exist).
Note: Contact Nan, PC for the Tennessee Project before creating a space page.
  • Research county formation history to establish a timeline people can use to properly categorize profiles. Working - see Tennessee Workspace page - Space: Workspace for Appalachia Project - Tennessee.
  • Check location categories for profiles of people who were born in, who lived in or who were associated with this region.

There will be two family lines of mine that I will be adding . They settled in Fincastle for awhile and are a very interesting family.

Welcome Paul Baukema to the Team!

Good evening. I'm doing a study of the families who lived in the Holston River Valley in what is now Scott Co., Virginia and Hawkins Co., Tennessee. Due to border disputes (Virginia v. Tennessee, 1893) families often lived in one county but were taxed by another. Since Scott Co. is in the Central region and Hawkins Co. is in the South Central region, which team should I join if I'm studying in this area?

Hi Tony!

That's an easy one -- join both! Many of us are members of more than one team. And that way you get more than one team leader supporting you! I'm the team leader for South Central and I'm happy to help any way that I can!

Tony -

To officially join our Project, answer our G2G post with the specific regions you wish to join (although we welcome all members to work in all regions of Appalachia and the World).

Thanks, Sandy

Thank you for having me! I'm very excited to work with the South Central team to locate Appalachian individuals, connect them with their families, and add solid sourcing and biographies to their profiles.

Thank you for including me in the South Central Appalachian Team. Almost all of my paternal roots originate from early Virginia to the Carolinas, on to Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and finally Arkansas. My most recent current personal challenge concerns John Oldham Hightower (Sr) wiki Hightower-162. Born in Virginia, a member of the Watauga Settlement in North Carolina and a Signer of the Watauga Petition of 1776 in Tennessee, died in 1823 in Lauderdale County, Alabama, he is all over the Appalachia map!!. My other southern surnames are Walker, White, Shirley, Seaton, Hightower, Coleman.
