2023 April Connect-a-Thon
April 21-24, 2023 are the dates for the second 2023 Connect-a-Thon!
- This three-day event will be our seventh Connect-a-Thon that the Southern Super Sweepers will participate in.
- The party starts Friday morning, April 21st, at 8 a.m. (EDT) and runs until Monday, April 24th, at 8 a.m. (EDT) (Eastern Time is GMT -4). Genealogists from all over the world will be participating at the same time. Hope to see you there!
- We don't specifically limit what profiles we connect, but Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas are what ties us together. Many of us have ancestors from these areas and will be focusing on profiles of people from these areas.

You need to appreciate that it may not work perfectly. It will sometimes have trouble reading information from other websites. That said, it's powerful! If it works for you, you'll be able to integrate information from other websites into WikiTree much more quickly and easily than if you were doing it by hand.

Monday, 26 Apr 2021 Well another Clean-A-Thon is completed and guess what: Super Sweepers came in 3rd place!!!! We did it!! So CONGRATULATIONS "Southern Super Sweepers" Team!!!!! We had completed 21,384 corrections with 8 people going past the 1,000 contributions mark! Pip of course is in the Lead (#1 spot). Way to go PIP; and special thank you's go out to: Kathy, Virginia, Lisa, John, Nan, me and Margaret, our other seven people that went over 1,000!!!!!!! But without the rest of you, we wouldn't have gone into the third place spot so pat yourself on the back as well and Thank You for all you have done this weekend. 18 Apr 2021 Greetings Super Sweepers... We are on our last five days before the "Clean-A-Thon". I hope you all get rested up because this weekend we will be super busy doing our sweeping and cleaning!!! Last year we shared some strategies that were helpful to the team so I want to share them again this year.
1. Suggestion 603, 633 and 663 USA too early in birth, death or marriage location just remove United States from any birth dates or death dates that is before July 4th 1776
2. Suggestion 631, Wrong word in death location, this usually means copy and paste the cemetery name in the bio and deleting it from the death location. See Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas.
3. Suggestion 835, Local File Reference, This is a sticky one, local file references must be removed because no one can see these. May require an long explanation to the profile manager. But there are a plethora of these, 500 to 1500 per state. Be prepared for backlash from profile managers.
4. Suggestion 868, Just paste in directly below ==Sources==, there are between 204 to 598 in all states.
5. Suggestion 851, Gedcom uncleaned interpret date. This one is a little more difficult because you have to read through all the Gedcom data and find and delete Interpret Date.
6. Suggestion 802, Empty Profile, you just need to past in the following headers:
Unsourced above the Biography header, then Sources and references headers at the end of where the bio narrative would be typed out.
7. Suggestions 611 and 641, birth or death location in lowercase. All that needs to be done to these is capitalized the first letter of the place name. But there are only 10 to 30 of these per State.
These are just some basic tips to easy clean-up of our southern states. Please share if you have some others that will help our members get the best results from their efforts this year!! Be ready to "go Super Sweepers Go" !!!

2020 Source-a-Thon (Completed)
October 2 - October 5, 2020 is our fifth annual "Source-a-Thon"! —This three-day event will be our Fifth annual "Source-a-Thon" that the "Southern Super Sweepers" will participate in.
The party starts Friday morning, October 2nd at 8 AM (ET) and runs until Monday, October 5th,— the start of Family History Month; at 8 AM (ET) (Eastern Daylight Time is GMT -4.) Genealogists from all over the world will be participating at the same time.
We try to keep the Southern Super Sweepers fun and helpful!
Even if your working on your own family, please take a look at the "SpreadSheet" there is a ton of helpful info on it. and you can post "Working on my Family", that's not a problem!
Remember, we are all about having fun!! Oh, and making our tree healthier!

A Tip shared by Steven Tibbetts on the G2G Registration page that I thought may be helpful to all of us: He wrote:
- I know many of us will be adding siblings and children from census data. And I know the easy solution is if you have the census link for say the father, to just copy it to all the children. The problem is technically that is a source for the father with mention of the child. If you click the child's name IN that source it will often give you the source for the child for you to use. Not as fast I know, but much more accurate and proper. (Also, as long as the profile is open, feel free to orphan it so a family member can adopt it if you aren't going to maintain it yourself).
Another tip found by Laura B. :
- When you click on "Connect A Thon" as the challenge you are working on; on the comment part, please add a statement saying: "X added Y as the ____ of Z."
Or in other words....... "X (put your name) added Mary Johnson as the spouse of John Smith." or "X (your name) added Tom Jones as the child of Bob Jones." If the contribution doesn't generate that kind of statement, it isn't counted.

We have a seasoned group of people who are going to blast through the dirt and debris of those unclean profiles !!!! We are covering the Southern States. We clean up whatever profile that needs cleaning. We have returning members from the 2018 Fall Source-a-Thon and we have many who also participated in the 2018 Spring Clean-a-Thon last year. We are going to all work on the states wherever we choose.
We don't specifically limit what profiles we edit, but the Southern States are what ties our team together: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas. Many of us have ancestors from these areas and will be focusing on profiles of people from these areas.

2019 Scan-A- Thon (Completed)
Next year (2019) WikiTree will hold its first ever Scan-A-Thon where you scan in photos and documents on profiles to help increase the look and the sources for these profiles. There is a limit of 10 uploads to each profile.
The PARTY starts Friday morning, January 11, at 8 AM (ET) and runs until Monday, January 14, at 8 AM (ET). (Eastern Standard Time is GMT -5.) There will be video chats every few hours with updates on how the event is going and prize drawings. Winners get to choose between a Scan-a-Thon t-shirt of coffee mug. (coffee mug will come in handy for the next Thon) We're encouraging genealogists from all over the world to participate at the same time.
Go HERE and sign up for the event. You need to state the team you wish to be on in your ANSWER. Please don't make it a comment or reply.
Our mission: to Scan and Share all those old family photos and other items we've been meaning to get to!
If you're already part of a team from a previous challenge and want to stay on it, mention that. Not all teams are available for the Scan-a-Thon so you may not end up on the same one. The current teams are listed here. More may be added.

Goal
The Most Important Thing Is To Have Fun!
Our team goal is to clear out the "Unsourced Profiles category" on WikiTree. Including sources is in our community's Honor Code but inexperienced genealogists don't always record them. Sometimes the source is "Aunt Mabel," as Mags put it. This doesn't mean the information isn't worth preserving or sharing. It's a starting point — information waiting to be confirmed.
