Notes on DNA Confirmation

Comments on DNA matches and relationship distance are based on The Shared cM Project's DNA Painter calculator and table at https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4

Relationships to Mother

DNA confirmation of Ellen's relationship to her mother, Catherine Van Aken, is based on:

  • Full sibling autosomal DNA match with sister Nancy Smith. Both tested on 23andMe.
  • Autosomal matches and mitochondrial haplogroup matches between Ellen and Nancy and their first cousin TG, son of a sister of Catherine, also tested on 23andMe. Ellen and TG match on 40 segments over 953 cM. Nancy and TG match on 40 segments over 1143 cM. Both of these matches are consistent with a first cousin -- and too strong for a half-first cousin or a first cousin once removed. All three tested individuals report mtDNA haplogroup H1e. These matches also confirm the relationships to maternal grandparents Helen (Wingard) Van Aken and Homer L. Van Aken.
  • Autosomal matches between Ellen and Nancy and their first cousin once removed (a grandchild of a sister of Catherine), also tested on 23andMe. Ellen and the cousin match on 23 segments over 589 cM (including X chromosome). Match between Nancy and this cousin is on 23 segments over 724 cM (including X chromosome). Both of these matches are in the predicted range for either a first cousin or a first cousin once removed.
  • Autosomal DNA match of Ellen Smith to Davis-42981 (Ellen's third cousin once removed); both trace ancestry to Philip Sultzbach and Mary Tice. Davis-42981 and Ellen Smith match on 75 cM over seven segments, the longest being 16.0 cM. This is essentially the expected match for a third cousin or a second cousin twice removed and is within the statistical range for relationships ranging from first cousin twice removed to fifth cousin. Nancy has a match with Davis-42981 of 38 cM on 4 segments, close to the predicted match for a third cousin twice removed and consistent with the statistical range for relationships ranging from second cousin once removed to fifth cousin three times removed. Their first cousin TG, who also maps as Davis-42981's third cousin once removed, matches Davis-42981 on a single segment at 17 cM (well within the statistical range for the mapped relationship). There is a three-way match between Davis-42981, TG, and Ellen Smith, on chromosome 2 at 53,537,829 to 57,093,359 -- apparently less than the 7-cM threshold for a triangulated autosomal match.

Relationship to Father

DNA confirmation of Ellen's relationship to her father, David Smith, is based on:

  • Full sibling autosomal DNA match with sister Nancy Smith. Both tested on 23andMe.
  • Multiple two-way autosomal DNA matches between (Ellen Smith and Nancy Smith and two second cousins who are grandchildren of Louise Clark Anderson, all tested on 23andMe. These matches are all consistent with a second-cousin relationship.

Other Notes

Garber / Bechtel

Siblings Garner-2620 and Garner-2621 map as 5th cousins once removed (MRCAs are Conrad Garber and Anna Bechtel). I have very weak matches on Gedmatch:

Garner-2620: chromosome 8: 47,653,281 - 55,436,353 5.4 cM, 1,106 SNPs
Garner-2621: chromosome 8: 47,653,281 - 55,436,353 5.4 cM, 1,113 SNPs

My sister Nancy has one decent match with Garner-2620:

chr 2: 6,855,195 9,758,054 9.0 cM, 771 SNPs
chr 11: 35,182,731 37,640,228 4.0 cM, 764 SNPs

And a similar match with Garner-2621:

chr 2: 6,855,195 9,701,086 8.9 cM, 747 SNPs
chr 11: 35,182,731 37,640,228 4.0 cM, 767 SNPs

I have even poorer matches with their sibling Garner-485:

chromosome 8: 50,093,227 - 54,596,441 4.6 cM, 783 SNPs
chromosome 15: 55,831,992 - 58,070,503 4.5 cM, 709 SNPs

Nancy's match with Garner-485 is:

chr 11 35,182,731 - 37,640,228 4.0 765
