By ending Spain's colononial emipire in the Western Hemisphere, the Spanish-American War of 1898 strengthened the position of the United States as a Pacific power. Spain relinquished its claim on Cuba, and its sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. [1]
