The current goal of this One Name Study is to compile and properly source all records for the Spratling name in Virginia pre-1800. Many of these families then removed to NC, SC, and GA, and then west.
There are few individuals with this name in Colonial America, and very few records for them. It is therefore difficult to establish relationships between them. Prior research often lacks proper sourcing, making it difficult to revisit their work and look for Allied Families in the records.
Surname Variants: Spracklin, Spradley, Spradlin(g), Spratley, Spratlin(g)
Other Variants: Spraddling, Spradlen, Spradly, Spratlen, Spratly … a few more.
Spradling appears to be the predominant variant (based on source count, rather than individual count) in Colonial Virginia.
Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.
- compile and properly source all records for Spratling name, including known and possible surname variants, in Virginia pre-1800. Many removed to NC, SC, and GA, and then west.
- research possible relationships between the known and possible surname variants.
- compile a list of Allied Families.

Based on a search of Ancestry.com's 1790, 1800, and 1810 US Federal Census indexes. Families were enumerated rather than individuals.
