Clean-a-Thon
Since our annual Source-a-Thon is so much fun, Laura Bozzay came up with the idea for a community clean-up weekend. We held our first Clean-a-Thon in 2017. It was a great success so we're making it an annual event.
Our goal for the Spring Clean-a-Thon is to clear out as many database suggestions as possible. To make it fun we're having teams and competing to see who can clear out the most.
Schedule
We're starting Saturday morning at 12:01 EDT (GMT -4), April 21, i.e. after midnight Friday night.
The event runs until Monday at midnight EDT, April 23.
We have these set times so that Wiki Genealogists from all over the world will be participating together, at the same time.
Here is a time zone calculator if you need help figuring out the right time in your part of the world.
Video chats
We will be hosting live YouTube video chats throughout the weekend to cheer each other on and announce t-shirt prize winners. There will be a chat every four hours, around the clock, with one winner drawn per chat.
You can find the schedule and links to the chats here.
Registration
You need to Register in advance.
Simply post an answer saying "Yes, I'd like to participate" along with what team you'd prefer, if any. If you're not sure about a team, say a few things about your location, genealogical interests, and/or what you like to work on at WikiTree.
After you post, a WikiTree Leader will award you the 2018 Spring Clean-a-Thon participant badge.
To participate you need to be a WikiTree member who has signed the Honor Code. If you're not already a member, login as a Guest now. You'll be invited to "volunteer" to help grow WikiTree. There are a few steps involved, but it's all just about verifying that you understand what WikiTree is about.
The cut-off date for registering is midnight on Thursday, April 19, 2018.
If you have any trouble or questions, contact Eowyn at eowyn@wikitree.com.
Teams
For fun, participants are divided into teams.
If you don't choose a team (see the list below) you will be assigned one.
Starting a team
Would you like to organize a team? Any participant can lead a team, and everyone who does will get a special 2018 Spring Clean-a-Thon t-shirt.
Teams can be organized around anything, or just for fun. They could be location-based, for a popular surname, related to a project, or around a specific Data Doctor suggestion or error group.
Team captains are expected to:
- Create a free-space profile for your team to communicate on. When the Clean-a-Thon starts we will add customized suggestion lists on team pages for team members to use, e.g. suggestions for Massachusetts profiles to the Team Massachusetts page.
- Recruit for your team by replying to members who post on the Register messages asking if they'd like to join your team.
- Communicate with team members to encourage them and cheer on the group.
- During the Clean-a-Thon, post to the team thread on G2G with updates about how the team is doing.
Are you interested in being a team captain? Contact Eowyn at eowyn@wikitree.com and let her know. If you don't have an idea for a team, she can let you know which ones are needed.
Notes:
- Every participant should be on one and only one team.
- Teams can have co-captains (both of whom will get t-shirts) but no more than two.
- Teams should have no more than 20-30 members. If a team gets larger than this, we recommend splitting it into two teams, e.g. Team Australia 1 and Team Australia 2.

Where to find suggestions
There are a few different ways to choose suggestions to work on:
- By Project:
- Go to the category page for the project you're interested in, e.g., Category: Project Name Project -- and look for the sub-categories named "Project Name Needs ..." or "Project Name Maintenance Categories".
- Use the "Managed By" option on WikiTree+ and enter the Project Account to run the error list on the watchlist for your project. You can find a list of Project Accounts here: Category: Project Accounts
- By Error Category:
- By Surname:
- Go to any surname page and click the "error report" link (HINT: It's in the middle of the links above the list of profiles)
Tracking progress
Progress reports are up to 5 minutes old:
Reports | By Team | By User | By Suggestion | By User and Suggestion | Update frequency |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Team | Team User | Team Suggestion | Team User and Suggestion | 5 min | |
Simple | Team | User | Suggestion | User and Suggestion | 5 min |
Detailed | Team Detailed | User Detailed | Suggestion Detailed | User and Suggestion Detailed | 1 hour |
By Day | Team by Day | User by Day | Suggestion by Day | User and Suggestion by Day | 1 hour |
Total By Hour | By Hour | 1 hour |
Scoring
Once you finish work on an error, you can set a status and enter a comment for it.
There are five actions:
- Comment (no change in status): This enables you to add a comment without changing the status.
- Not corrected: This sets the error as not corrected. It will continue to be shown in all lists.
- Corrected (hide until next recheck): This sets the error as corrected so it will be hidden from error reports until next dump. After that it will be shown again if it was not actually corrected.
- False error (hide forever): This sets the error as a false error. It will be hidden from WikiTree+ error reports forever.
- Proposed merge (hide for 30 days): This hides the error for 30 days thus giving a merge time to be completed. The error will be hidden from prepared error lists.
Each time you work an error and set the status, you'll earn a contribution point.
Prizes
We will be awarding special "2018 Spring Clean-a-Thon" t-shirts as prizes.
- All team captains will get a t-shirt that says "Team Captain" on it.
- The top five winners who correct the most suggestions will get t-shirts.
- We will draw one participant at random during every video chat (see the section above). You don't need to be in the chat to win but you do need to Register in advance and claim your prize before the next drawing.
We know that many participants won't be online when their number is drawn. The Clean-a-Thon is running 24-hours a day for 72 hours straight. If you're online for 72 hours we'll be worried about you!
If you're not present when your name is drawn, you'll have until the next video chat to claim your prize by replying to this G2G post.
If you don't claim your shirt before the next drawing, your name will go back in the hat.
Every participant can get only one t-shirt, therefore:
- Team captains cannot win drawings — they all get t-shirts.
- If you win a drawing, you can't win again.
- Clean-a-Thon winners will only get one shirt.
Badges for Winners
In addition to the participation badge, the top winners will get the 2018 Spring Clean-a-Thon Winner badge. These winners will include:
- The top 10 winners.
- The top winner in each error category.
- Everyone on the winning team who participated.
