Springdale Cemetery and Mausoleum
Founded in 1854 and owned by the City of Peoria, it is one of the largest cemeteries in Illinois with 223 acres of hills and valleys and 6.5 miles of roads. Springdale is the final resting place for people of many nationalities including African, English, French, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Korean, Polish, Russian, Scandinavian, Spanish, Vietnamese and more. It is a cemetery that is also a park, a museum, a game preserve, a library, a historical site and a classroom. In addition to traditional burial, Springdale also offers a pet cemetery, a war memorial and a section called Prairie Gardens - a scattering garden for cremains. The mausoleum, built in 1929, is made of marble, granite, bronze and glass. Historic reenactments are held at Springdale in the fall that help us remember the interesting lives of those who are buried there—people who created Peoria's history and whose decisions and actions shaped the city and region.
