St John the Baptist Church, Croydon, Surrey

St John the Baptist Church, Croydon, Surrey
The church was elevated to the status of a Minster on 29 May 2011. It is dedicated to St John the Baptist and prior to being made a Minster, it was known as St John the Baptist Church, Croydon. The church was gutted by fire on the night of 5 January 1867. When it was rebuilt the remains of the medieval tower and south porch were incorporated into the new building.

A church has been present on this site since at least 960 AD. It was a Catholic church until the English reformation, probably served by a nearby monastery of some sort. While there is mention of the church in various records from the Catholic period, the earliest surviving church records are Church of England records from around the time of the Reformation. See Croydon St John the Baptist Surrey Genealogy.

Note: There are two Church of England churches in St John the Baptist Parish, Surrey - the Minister and its daughter church, St George's Church on Barrow Road in Waddon, London.
