History

Right Rev. Bishop Alipius Goold visited England in 1855 where he commissioned Charles Hansom to produce church designs. Charles Hansom was an English architect based in London, where he was in partnership with his brother Joseph. Joseph had earlier designed the hansom cab[1].

The architectural drawings arrived in Victoria at the end of 1855 and were executed by local architects in various Victorian parishes including Kilmore[1].

In 1857 Mr. Sutherland, a Melbourne builder, began construction on the bluestone Gothic-Early English style church under the watchful eye of Fr. Timothy O’Rourke [2].

The foundation stone was laid on the 23rd of August, 1857 by Right Rev. Bishop Alipius Goold[3], and the church was dedicated and opened for services on 8th July 1860[4].

The design of the church was completed by William Wardell in 1871[2].
