A Pioneer Missionary Memorial at Kataia
Archbishop Averill unveiled a lectern in the Anglican Church here this afternoon to the memory of Mr William Gilbert Puckey one of the pioneer missionaries of the district and co-adjutor with the late Rev Mr Matthews A social gathering was subsequently held.

MISSIONARY CENTENARY - CHURCH MEMORIAL.
In connection with the centenery of the establishment of the Kaitaia mission station, it has been decided by the church committee to erect a lychgate at St. Saviour's Church, Kaitaia, at an estimated cost of £IOO. A tablet will be erected bearing the names ot the pioneer missionaries, the Rev. Joseph and Mrs Matthews, Mr and Mrs William Gilbert Puckey, and the Maori chief who protected and befriended the early missionaries, Nopera Panakareao.

Built in 1934, The lych gate faced east and west in line with the church; built of red heart of totara and roofed with totara shingle. The dimensions were 8' wide 9' long and 12' 9" in height to the ridge, the sides 7' 6". It was painted light brown with the seats a lead colour. Pierced Gothic work decorated the gables. The dedication, in Maori and in English read - To the Glory of God and in grateful memory of the founding of the Mission Station in Kaitaia By CMS Mar 18 1834 and in honoured memory of those pioneers of the Gospel in this district: Joseph Matthews (priest), Mary Ann Matthews, William Gilbert Puckey, Matilda Puckey, Nopera Panakareao (chief) [3]
