On 22 October 1913, 284 miners were caught in an explosion in Stag Canon mine No. 2.[2] The explosion was followed by a fire.[3] As of the 26th none left in the mine were alive, 140 bodies had been pulled out, 23 lives were saved.[2] 13 of the bodies had "unknown" marked on their coffins since identification was impossible to discern.[2] Two of the helmet-men lost their lives in the effort to save possible life. [2][4] Of the 263 that lost their lives, it's reported that the miners were 146 were from Italy and 36 were from Greece.

Rescue Efforts
Miners striking in southern Colorado, nurses and relief workers from Texas, among many others joined the rescue efforts.[3]
Results and Findings
A report to William McDermott, mine superintendent, by a night guard that dust-gas was filling the mine and it was unsafe.[5] Additional mining machines had been put into the mine but no additional fans were added to exhaust the increase in dust.[5]
