The grandson of Adam de Aldithley, took the name Stanley from the manor of "Stanley of Staffordshire" when he married the heiress. The name is of Anglo-Saxon origin from any of the places in Derbyshire, Durham and Gloucester. The first syllable Stan means "stone" and the second syllable ley/leah means "wood/clearing".
