Welcome to the Steele County, Minnesota project page!

The county remained practically an unbroken wilderness until the summer of 1853, when A. L. Wright, Chauncey Lull, Smith Johnson, Orlandof Johnson and L. M. Howard staked off claims in what is now Medford Township. Some of the party began to make improvements. In the fall L. M. Howard turned over the first sod in what is now Steele County.^[1]
