This study is dedicated to Luise Mechau née Steurenthaler (1926–2023)

The Steurenthaler Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Steurenthaler name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Steurenthaler name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (United States Steurenthaler's), by time period (18th Century Steurenthaler's), or by topic (Steurenthaler DNA, Steurenthaler Occupations, Steurenthaler Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Origin of the Name

According to Klaus Weber,^[1]as well as to Julius Koberne,^[2] the name goes back to the Steurental valley, through which the river Steuren flows. It is situated in Eschbach, a part of Stegen, in Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Early church book records from the 17th, 18th and early 19th century suggest, that in the local Alemannic German dialect, the name earlier was pronounced with an "ei" rather than today's "eu". That is probably the reason, how "Steirenthal" got into a Baden travel guide of 1872.^[3] The 1905 Topographical Dictionary of Baden lists the forms Steurental, Steiernthal, Stürental and Stürendal for the valley.^[4]
