Background

This WikiTree free-space page (Adey Family Trees on FamilySearch website) analyses the genealogical research the has been done on the LDS Family Search website to connect their records of ADEYs into a 'single' family tree. The WikiTree website expects all new person profiles to be properly sourced, but I does not itself contain comprehensive transcripts of genealogical records. The Family Search website has been create by the the LDS church membership to support their beliefs in the sealing of their ancestors. Their website offers easy access to a vast compendium of genealogical resources, which are easily cited. although access to the images is often only through an LDS History Center library (or an associate library). This is another one in my collection of WikiTree pages, (or ADEY research notes[1] that support my investigation into the ADEY Family Origins[2]. They include: analysis of the surname ADEY and related variants (organized by same website[3][4][5][6]; or study by geographic location[7][8][9]).

While trying to provide source citations for the Adey Family trees on the three websites that I am currently analyzing, I realised that [2] also holds Adey Family trees worth analyzing. It is one of the websites that are recommending on WikiTree, when needing to cite a source (as login signup is free). This is unlike https://Ancestry.com, which is a commercial site, with a large genealogical records collection (hidden behind a paywall). Experimenting with tree search on the FamilySearch site revealed that a suitable choice of search terms returned a limited number of Adey trees. It also gave an insight into what variant surnames were searched by FamilySearch for a particular surname.

Initial Results

Login and select "Search > Family Tree" then choose "Find by Name > More Options". Then a "Search" for "Last Names: Adey", "Match Last Names exactly", "Place: England" & "Match Place exactly" gave "Results: (3,964). Choosing a more specific "Place: Gloucestershire, England" gave "Results: 442". Being very specific "Place: Painswick, Gloucestershire, England" gave "Results (36), which is much more manageable. Relaxing "Last Names Match exactly" gave "Results (37), with the addition of one "Adee". Changing the search to "Last Names (Addey)" gave "Results: (2)", with one Addey and one Edey. Changing the surname through various different variants produced the following equivalences:

FamilySearch variant equivalent Last Names
Group-1 Group-2 Group-3 Group-4 Group-5
Adde Ade Adey Addie Ady
Addes Eade Adee Addy Oddie
Eades Adie Addey Ody
Ede Addye Aedy Oddey
Edee Adye Eddy
Edie Adyes Edy
Eedes Adies Edey
Eed Edye
Ide Eddy
Eddye
Eddys
Eddies
Heady
Oddy
Udy

These above results were produced (with the "Last Names Match exactly" disabled) by choosing a known variant (as a search seed), and then choosing other surnames from the group as it formed. The surname frequency of a particular surname variant had to be used to to vary the population area, from the UK to the country to an individual county. This was essential, since all the results for the elected surname always appear first and, even with 100 results on a page selected, the reults from that surname could fill none or many pages.

FamilySearch A-variants

Repeating the search for different countries, and then for different counties that have higher frequencies of the surname(s), with the "Last Names Match exactly" ticked again, gave the following Results:

First Thoughts

It is clear that the distribution of variants is not uniform, and some type of non-random process is operating. It seems clear that knowlege within the official, or the family, or the recording process is operating, influencing the distribution of spelling variants. The limited number of variants and counties currently analysed are not yet a large enough sample to draw firm conclusions. It will require a lot of work to tabulate the results for all variant in all counties. However, it was much easier to extend this simple analysis to a limited set of variants in the the overall UK, the three mainland countries, and .a small subset of counties where the surname is believed to be more frequent It is not yet clear how Ireland is handled by the FamilySearch site, as (although it was partitioned in the 20th century) it was unified for most of the period of interest to serious genealogists.

Surname Frequency and UK 1881 Census

The 1881 Census has been analysed by statisticians and mapped to try and determine where in the UK the frequency of the surname is highest. I have produced a separate analysis page[10] for the 1881 census, since there may need to be separate analysis pages for each of the UK censuses. It tabulates the same data as on the relevant British Surnames page [11], as the start of the anaysis to cover all counties, and make it more accessible.

The Space:ADEY_research_notes,_Hampshire_England page also contains an initial analysis of the key UK county census filtered results by decadal survey for the surname ADEY, to complement the Hampshire, England results.
