PURPOSE
Understanding the parts of the profile page and its tools will make your work in WikiTree much more productive. The goal is an introduction to the parts of a profile. It is not a comprehensive how-to.
NOTE: If the WikiTree Browser Extension has been added to your browser, profiles will have a different display. See WikiTree Browser Extension for more information.
PROFILE OVERVIEW
WikiTree Logo
- Clicking on this logo will open the the WikiTree "home" page. Information provided includes status of the tree, member of the week, profile of the week, question of the week, reference to WikiTree videos, and more.
Name and Photo Block
- Photo - the photo or avatar, if provided, will appear in the upper left.
- Name - the person's name for this profile is displayed.
- For WikiTree members, below the name is the date the Honor Code (Wiki Genealogist) was signed or just the Family Member badge.
- Contributions - in that same area is the Contributions link. Clicking on it will open a list of the contributions made beginning with the latest. The information may be useful to see if the member is active.
- Thank-yous - on your profile next is the number of Thank Yous received. Clicking on it will open the list of thank-yous with the name of the member and the reason.
- Connections- next on your profile is the number of connections is displayed as a link. Clicking on it will open a page titled "My Connections." There are several options available to choose the data desired.
- Privacy Symbol - On the far right is a lock symbol indicating the privacy level set on the profile. (See Privacy under Profile Links below.)
Profile ID Links
- To the right of the person's name are 3 links preceded by a scissors symbol followed by - ID, Link and URL. Placing the cursor on top of each will:
- ID (Wiki ID) - example: Awbrey-135
- Link (Wiki Link) - example: [[Awbrey-135|Stuart Awbrey]]
- URL - example: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Awbrey-135
- :Clicking on the symbol will copy the item, as shown in the examples above, and the box message will change to "Copied."
- :The copied item can then be pasted wherever needed.

- Located in the upper right are 5 drop down menus as shown here. Regardless of which profile you are on, the links are related to your personal profile. Hover over a caption to open a list of links.
- You should open each link. Study the information and the options most of them provide. Doing so will make it much easier to find the information needed as you work in WikiTree.
- Some of the links are repeats of links found elsewhere on the profile.
- The links are updated infrequently.

- Nav Home Page (Navigation Home Page) - (when you logon to WikiTree you will see this page unless you opted to open with your profile) the page can be customized. Default is a family tree covering 3 generations; how to get started on WikiTree; your badges, a scratch pad similar to a space page; G2G Discussion Feed; Family Activity Feed; Wiki Genealogy Feed and a list of Thank Yous.
- Suggestions - a list of Data Doctors Suggestions for profiles you manage.
- Surnames (Surname Navigation Page - a list of your first 8 surnames which can be expanded to 64.
- Wiki Id (ex: Williams-000):
- G2G Profile - there is a table listing your current points and your G2G activity. (See how points are calculated - Help:Badges and Points - G2G Points and Titles.
- Suggestions - a list of Data Doctors Suggestions for profiles of people related to you.
- Add:
- New Person - this link opens a page titled "Add an Unrelated Person."
- New Thing - the link opens a page on which a free-space page can be created - see Wales Resources - Creating A Free-Space Page for more information.
- Find:
- Projects - a help page will open listing all the WikiTree projects.
- Search - a page is opened providing options to search for WikiTree profiles.
- Unconnected People - opens a list of unconnected profile on your Watchlist.
- Help:
- Forum G2G - opens G2G to "recent questions and answers." (ADD LINK IF PAGE IS CREATED EXPLAINING G2G).
- Help - opens a page listing all the WikiTree Help pages.
- Problems w/Members - opens a Help page describing the procedure to follow when there is a problem with a member.
- Style Guide - opens "Category: Styles and Standards page which describes formatting standards and style conventions.
- WikiTree Team - opens a page with a photo of the WikiTree Team and their bios.
Followed Tags Box on Your Profile
- Followed tags appear only on your personal profile and are a way for you to:
- # follow activity in the topics that interest you, and
- # connect with other genealogists who share the same interests.
- The tags in the top section, shown in black, are automatically entered here based on your posted DNA information. Clicking on the black boxes reveals additional information.
- The tags in the middle section, shown in green, were entered by you. These are referred to a "followed tags." Examples are surnames and subjects you are interested in. If you are a member of a project, its tag should be added. Clicking on a tag will provide a list of other members involved.
- Tags can be added (up to 20) or deleted by clicking on the [edit] link.
- The bottom list of tags, shown in gold, are automatically added based on your activity. Clicking on a surname box, or the [more] link will generate a list of the changes made on profiles with that surname. Current month changes are not included.
Badges Box on Your Profile
- This is a display of the badges assigned to you and those you have earned through contributions. Clicking on a badge will provide a list of all members who hold that badge.
Profile Links
- (person's name) Profile - seen if you are a manager of the profile
- Edit - this link opens the profile for editing several parts of the profile
- Images - this link opens the page used to upload images - see xx for procedure
- Tree Apps - this link opens a page with a menu of various methods to display that profiles family tree
- Changes - this link opens the page which lists all the changes made to the profile
- Privacy - this link opens the page where the various levels of privacy can be set - see xx
- [public view] - view seen if not the manager
- Categories - this link moves to the section of the profile listing its categories
- Comments - this link moves to the Comments section
- Matches - this link moves to near the bottom of the profile where matches to other profiles are listed. The list is updated weekly in relation to the WikiTree profile of the week.
- Sources - this link moves to the Sources section
History/Status Box
- The first line of this profile section contains the name of the profile's manager followed by two links for sending a private message.
- The 2nd line begins with the profile's Wiki ID followed by its creation date. Next on the line is the date it was last modified. The last link "Last tracked change:" opens the Changes page for the profile.
- The next line, sometimes two lines, describe the last change, who made it, what was changed and the date.
- The last line states how many times the profile has been accessed.
DNA Connections
- DNA Connections on the right side of the page is automatically populated from input at a different page.
Images
- Images appear to the right of the Biography. (possible addition: add info here and/or link to a page)
Collaboration
- The information in this section will vary depending on the profile content and your relationship to the profile. For example, if you are the profile manager or on the Trusted List, this line will appear:
- Edit: As a member of the Trusted List you're invited to improve this profile and upload images.
Research
- Research
- RootsSearch for (profile name): conveniently search 20+ genealogy websites. [more info]
- The words "RootsSearch for (profile name)" is a link which opens RootsSearch an independent app. Personal information from the profile is included. Up to six links are provided to allow searches on web sites such as Ancestry.com, FamilySearch, Findmypast, Find a Grave, MyHeritage and Google Search.
- The [more info] link opens WikiTree's Help:RootsSearch
Biography
- This section contains the individual's biography. Depending on the Privacy level, others may modify the content.
Sources
- Content in this section can range from none to a large number. See xxx below.
Memories
- This section only appears if you are the profile manager or (trusted list?). Click on the ? mark link to see the help page.
Comments
- This is displayed if no Comments have been posted.
- Click on POST NEW COMMENT to post a message.
- This image displays a sample posted comment.
- Included at the top is the name of the person who posted the comment. Below the message is the date and time it was posted.
- Below the date and time are these links: reply, edit, delete, archive, flag and move to G2G.
- "reply" - use this link for replies rather than "POST NEW COMMENT"
- "archive" - this link will remove the message from the default view
- "flag" - this link will note and report spam or offensive language
- "move to G2G" - this link will re-post the message in the Genealogist to Genealogist Forum
Matches and Merges
- Merges: - the first part of this section describes the importance of merging to support the concept of one profile per person. The status of merges, if any, are displayed.
- Matches: the next part of this section lists profiles of matched persons. This list is updated weekly in relation to the profile of the week. The last sentence includes links for "your connection" and "your genealogical relationship":
- "your connection" - this link opens a page that displays the ancestor/relative relationship by degrees, WikiTree's status, profile of the week and other information
- "your genealogical relationship" - this link opens a page that displays you Direct Relationship, if any plus links to other related pages
- both pages include the "Relationship Finder"
Categories
- This section lists the categories as a link that have been included in the Biography section. Each category will list all other profiles which contain the same categories.
- For example: this profile includes the category "Kingsville, Texas". Opening that category page will display all the profiles which have this category included.

- Private Messages: Send a private message to the Profile Manager. (Best when privacy is an issue.)
- Public Comments: Login to post. (Best for messages specifically directed to those editing this profile. Limit 20 per day.)
- Public Q&A: These will appear above and in the Genealogist-to-Genealogist (G2G) Forum. (Best for anything directed to the wider genealogy community.)
