Project Goals
The goal of the Wales Project is to improve the quality and quantity of Welsh profiles. To assist with this goal, click on the Genealogy Research tab above for information on researching your family tree and best practices for writing/editing your profiles.
Project Teams
In order to work towards our goal, we organise ourselves into teams which come under the following areas:
County Teams There are 13 historic counties in Wales, and our geographical teams are organised into each of those counties. The Project Coordinator for the County Teams is Hilary Gadsby.
Profile Improvement Teams The various profile improvements teams work on specific types of profile improvement across the whole of Wales. The Project Coordinator for the Profile Improvement Team is Steve Bartlett
Managed Profiles Team The Managed Profiles Team focuses on our Managed, PPP'd, Notables and 5-Star profiles. The goal is assure these profiles are of the highest quality per WikiTree standards. The project coordinator is Todd Gilbert
Topics Teams Topics Teams include teams working on various Welsh thematic subjects including Diaspora, Historic Buildings (including religious, schools, houses) and Disasters. The Project Coordinator is Stuart Awbrey.
Welsh Dragons The Welsh Dragons are a non-competitive team that participate in all WikiTree thons, focusing mainly on Welsh profiles.
An overview of the profile page. Understanding the parts of the profile page and its tools will make your work in WikiTree much more productive.
Profile Name and Related Information
NOTE: Blue colored text pertains only to your personal profile.
Name and Photo Block
Photo - the photo or avatar, if provided, will appear in the upper left.
Name - the person's name for this profile is displayed.
- On your profile: your name is shown and below it is the date you signed the Honor Code (Wiki Genealogist) or Family Member status.
Contributions - to the right of the signed date is the total number of contributions you have made on WikiTree displayed as a link. Clicking on it will open a list of your contributions in reverse date and time order.
Thank-yous - next is the number of thank-yous received from members displayed as a link. Clicking on it will open the list of thank-yous with the name of the member and the reason.
Connections- the number of connections is displayed as a link. Clicking on it will open a page titled "My Connections." There are several options available to choose the data desired.
Privacy Symbol - On the far right is a symbol indicating the privacy level set on the profile. (See Privacy under Profile Links below.)
Profile ID Links
- To the right of the person's name for the profile are 3 links preceded by a scissors symbol. They are in sequence - ID, Link and URL. Placing the cursor on top of each will:
- ID - open a box stating "Copy ID" (also referred to a Wiki ID). Ex: Awbrey-135
- Link - open a box stating "Copy Wiki Link." Ex: [[Awbrey-135|Stuart Awbrey]]
- URL - open a box stating "Copy URL." Ex: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Awbrey-135
- Clicking on the box will copy the item, as shown in the examples above, and the box message will change to "Copied."
- The copied item can then be pasted wherever needed.

Located in the upper right are 5 drop down menus as shown here. Regardless of which profile you are on, the links are related to your personal profile. Hover over a caption to open a list of links.
You should open each link. Study the information and the options most of them provide. Doing so will make it much easier to find the information needed as you work in WikiTree.
Some of the links are repeats of links found elsewhere on the profile.
The links are updated infrequently.
Some examples under My WikiTree:
- Nav Home Page (Navigation Home Page - (when you logon to WikiTree you will see this page unless you opted to open with your profile) the page can be customized. Default is a family tree covering 3 generations; how to get started on WikiTree; your badges, a scratch pad similar to a space page; G2G Discussion Feed; Family Activity Feed; Wiki Genealogy Feed and a list of Thank Yous.
- Suggestions - a list of Data Doctors Suggestions for profiles you manage.
- Surnames (Surname Navigation Page - a list of your first 8 surnames which can be expanded to 64.
Some examples under your Wiki Id (ex: Williams-000):
- G2G Profile - there is a table listing your current points and your G2G activity. (See how points are calculated - Help:Badges and Points - G2G Points and Titles.
- Suggestions - a list of Data Doctors Suggestions for profiles of people related to you.
Some examples under Add:
- New Person - this link opens a page titled "Add an Unrelated Person."
- New Thing - the link opens a page on which a free-space page can be created - see Wales Resources - Creating A Free-Space Page for more information.
Some examples under Find:
- Projects - a help page will open listing all the WikiTree projects.
- Search - a page is opened providing options to search for WikiTree profiles.
- Unconnected People - opens a list of unconnected profile on your Watchlist.
Some examples under Help:
- Forum G2G - opens G2G to "recent questions and answers." (ADD LINK IF PAGE IS CREATED EXPLAINING G2G).
- Help - opens a page listing all the WikiTree Help pages.
- Problems w/Members - opens a Help page describing the procedure to follow when there is a problem with a member.
- Style Guide - opens "Category: Styles and Standards page which describes formatting standards and style conventions.
- WikiTree Team - opens a page with a photo of the WikiTree Team and their bios.
Followed Tags Box
Followed tags appear only on your personal profile and are a way for members to:
# follow activity in the topics that interest them, and # connect with other genealogists who share the same interests.
The tags in the top section, shown in black, are automatically entered here based on your posted DNA information. Clicking on the black boxes reveals additional information.
The tags in the middle section, shown in green, are entered by you. These are referred to a "followed tags." Examples are surnames and subjects you are interested in. If you are a member of a project, its tag should be added. Clicking on a tag will provide a list of other members involved.
The bottom list of tags, shown in gold, are automatically added base on your activity. Clicking on a surname box will generate a list of the changes made on profiles with that surname.
Badges Box
This is a display of the badges assigned to you and those you have earned through contributions. Clicking on a badge will provide a list of all members who hold that badge.
Profile Links
- Profile (public view) - this is the view seen when not logged in to WikiTree
- Edit - this link opens the profile for editing several parts of the profile
- Images - this link opens the page used to upload images - see xx for procedure
- Family Tree & Tools - this link opens a page full of information and links:
- it begins with a family tree of ancestors
- Changes - this link opens the page which lists all the changes made to the profile
- Privacy - this link opens the page where the various levels of privacy can be set - see xx
- Profile (private view) - this is the view seen when logged in to WikiTree
If displayed:
- Categories - this link moves to the section of the profile listing its categories
- Comments - this link moves to the Comments section
- Matches - this link moves to the place where pre-loaded matches to other profiles may be listed and links used to find matches
- Sources - this link moves to the Sources section
History Box
- The first line of this profile section contains the name of the profile's manager in the form of a link. Following are 2 symbols which are links - 1st is to the Relationship Finder; 2nd is a link to send the manager a private message. Next is a second link to send a private message.
- The 2nd link begins with the Wiki ID for the profile followed by its creation date. Next on the line is the date it was last modified. The last link "Last tracked change:" opens the Changes page for the profile.
- The 3rd & 4th lines may describe the last change, who made it, what was changed and the date.
- The 5th line states how many times the profile has been accessed.

New Member Goals
- The goal is for Wales Project members to be able create and revise profiles which are well written and sourced.
- Applicants for Wales Project membership will need to complete this program to receive the Wales Project badge.
Training Program For Membership Applicants
It is a self-study program with an open book exam to conclude. The program relies on the Wiki Genealogist Honor Code. To summarize:
- We collaborate
- We care about accuracy
- We know mistakes are inevitable
- We know misunderstandings are inevitable
- We respect privacy
- We respect copyrights
- We give credit
- We cite sources
- We are united in a mission to increase the world's common store of knowledge
The program is designed to assist membership applicants who are in these categories:
- Length of time a WikiTree member
- The number and quality of your contributions
- Experienced WikiTree member who only needs to learn about the Wales Project
- Exception: applicants who have completed an England or Scotland Orphan Trail program will only need to complete the Wales portion.
There are two parts to the program - general knowledge of WikiTree and specific knowledge of Wales Project.
