William Davis Stuart first appears in the 1850 Winston County, Mississippi census. His last name was spelled Stewart and his given name was transcribed as William G. 1850 U. S. Census, Population Schedule Winston County, MS, Subdivision #22 Reel # M432-382, page 355b, Line 20/22, House # 563, Family #571 Enumerated on the 28th day of Sept 1850 by William B. Smith Stewart, William G. (transcriber error) 26, M, Farmer, $400 value, p.o.b. ALA R/W-x Stewart, Hannah 18, F, p.o.b. ALA R/W-x Stewart, Polly 6/12, F, p.o.b. ALA

But the wife and first born child are named correctly. Wife was Hannah Jones, daughter of Madison Dudley Jones, Sr. and Hannah Stainton. In 1850 Winston Co. Census, next door Line 15, House #562, Family #570 is an Aaron M. Stewart, 33, M, Farmer, p.o.b. ALA with wife; Lucy, 23,p.o.b. ALA; dau. Mary, 6, p.o.b. Miss; dau. Sarah, 4, p.o.b. Miss.; dau. Frances, 6mos, p.o.b. Miss. A few doors away, House #566, Family #574 is William Stewart, 54, Farmer, p.o.b. VA with wife(?); Polly, 66, p.o.b. S.C.; Sally, 23, p.o.b. ALA; Polly, 21, p.o.b. Ala; & John, 19, p.o.b. Ala; John Bell, 6, p.o.b. MS; Joshua, 3, p.o.b. MS. In 1860 he is listed in Neshoba County as W.D. Stewart and a growing family. He remained in Neshoba until his death. Y-DNA has linked me to the James Stewart/Mary Ann Lafferty family who settled on the Cowpasture River in Virginia in the mid 1700s. The Big-Y DNA test links me most closely with a known descendant of Capt. Ralph Stewart, son of James. We Y-DNA tested a known descendant of the William and Polly Stewart neighbor in 1850 Winston County and got a match. Plus descendants of their children match us on Autosomal DNA. Country singer Marty Stuart is also a descendant of this William Davis Stuart! Any descendants of Capt. Ralph Stewart loose a William in Alabama who might have moved to Mississippi?
