Goals

This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about one surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.

The purpose of this name study is to hopefully identify all the people with the Stumpfel surname who were born or lived in Komjat, Vas, Hungary or what is now known today as Kemeten, Burganland, Austria. It is near Oberwart in the mountains, about 1 hour south of Vienna.

I am particularly interested in possibly two different families. 1) the Stumpfel family who were the midwife / farmers in town; 2) the Stumpfel family who were the bakers in town.

I know many people left the town in the early 1900's up until around WWII to find a better life in the U.S.A. Those of us who are struggling to identify our heritage in the U.S. have run in to numerous problems such as language barriers, lack of available records, and loss of oral history due to no one wanting to talk about it.

So I though it best to proceed in this order:

  1. ) beginning with the heads of household in 1857 that members of the Burgenland Bunch put together (see link below);
  2. ) locate anyone who stated on a ship manifest that they originated from this place;
  3. ) locate anyone on immigration/naturalization records that noted they were from this place;
  4. ) finally to locate anyone on U.S. census records that claim they were from here.

I believe there are no remaining people by the name of Stumpfel living in this town who are related to either the midwife or the bakers. I have found some Stumpfel's in the surrounding areas which might have a connection to those from this specific town. However, due to the enormous amount of people in Europe who have this surname, it's impossible to tell for sure if they are all related to each other at this point in time.

History of Kemeten

The following is from the Kemeten website using google translator (see link at bottom):

History & Development Naming and historical development of the community history of Kemeten:

The village name of our municipality, the translation of the magyar word "komjat", suggests the former presence of a mansion in Kemeten - komjat means "a house of chimneys or a mansion" (Ofn, kaminata, kemenate). To the west of today's village, a castle is said to have been situated on a wooded ridge, after which the Burggrabenbach and Burgstallberg got their name.

The first documented mention of the village is found in 1475 under the name of Komyath, in 1610 we find the name Komjaty, 1635 Komjáthi, 1698 Komjati, 1773 Komjáth, 1786 Komiat, Kometen and 1808 Komethen. In the 15th cent. The settlement was connected with the rule of Buchenschachen. In 1484 it became the property of the Kaldy family and in 1574 it was owned by the Batthyany family. From 1750 it was under the rule of the tree churches of Schlaining. In the 18th century, Kemeten counted among the so-called contract-villages, which meant that the municipality had to perform its services on the basis of treaties concluded with the rule. From the Treaty of 1.1.1746 we can see what services were required by the inhabitants of Kemeten.

After this the domination of the vineyard right, of the wine, of the bees and of the goose, and of the caponies for the Kreithswehren, was accepted. Robot was carried out in the form of the processing of the vineyard in the Rechnitzer Weinberg. In addition, the grapes and presses had to be read and the must removed after Schlaining for all other stately vineyards.

In addition, Hoffelder of the Dornauer Meierei and the stately meadows in Neumarkt had to be worked on. The transport of the wine wine from "the German mountains" to Schlaining and from ripsticks, bindings and shops to the sawmill from Szent Grot to Schlaining formed the so-called Spannungsdienst.

War events in Kemeten:

Since the population suffered severely from the imposed burdens, there were several times a lot of farmers' suits in Schlaining. This did not change much the edition of the Theresian archbishop of 1767. As single localities in the consequence donations and robot simply no longer afforded, it came from the Grundherrschaft 1776 to a Urbarialprozess - among other things also against the village Kemeten.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Our country was again involved in war events, our territory was not spared; In 1805 and 1809, Frenchmen entered the northern part of the country and crossed our territory. After their withdrawal, the dreary situation of the population was even more severe due to increased tax burdens, taxation and monetary depreciation.

The First World War also cast a great shadow on the church. In August 1914 the first and second commandments left Kemeten; 43 men had to be reported as fallen or missing in the last year of the war; Their names are engraved on a marble plaque at the war memorial.

Even in the Second World War, there were hardly any families in Kemeten, some of whom were not at the front. A total of 120 had fallen to complain to the congregation. The "black cross" reminds us today of the dead heroes.

In the war years of the Second World War lived about 213 Roma (exact number is not known) in Kemeten. These Roma were all deported to various concentration camps. In 1945 only five returned to Kemeten. According to a victim's statistics about racially persecuted in Burgenland from the year 1952, 208 Roma no longer returned to Kemeten.

In spite of the depressing picture that was present throughout the community after warfare, progress in all spheres of life quickly spread through. 170 houses were built in the post-war period alone.

Reconstruction of the community

In 1962 the new Volksschule was completed. The creation of the 18 km long main line was a milestone in the long-standing water miseries. The generous expansion of the local roads made a great deal of dust clearance; As well as a modern sports facility and a recreation hall.

Through the construction of transformer stations, the electrification of households and businesses was made possible, and local lighting was also expanded during these years.

The local fire brigade was supported by the purchase of new equipment and a new vehicle.

Important projects of the present were the local canalisation as well as the local road and field roads, as well as the creation of a two-tier kindergarden.

With the establishment of the community center in the years 1983/84 other important functional tasks could be fulfilled. On the occasion of the opening, Herbert Schügerl erected a beautifully designed fountain in front of the town hall.

Infrastructure in Kemeten

In recent years, emphasis has also been placed on the design of the place and the creation of a life-loving and loving environment. In Burgenland in 1984, Burgenland honored the communes' exemplary municipal achievements with the award of the municipal coat of arms. The infrastructure is fully developed, the municipality is connected to the South Water Association. Sewage disposal is carried out via a municipal sewer system via the Bocksdorf central sewage treatment plant.

In the community center, the municipal administration is housed with a small library and the multipurpose room, the fire department, a doctor's office and three apartments.

In the years 2001 to 2005, an operating area with a size of around 22 ha was built in the northern area of Kemeten and the necessary infrastructure was created. Through the establishment of several companies, many jobs were created and secured. At the moment, the company is still able to acquire factory premises.

More history: Kemeten Village of 1500 residents in the Oberwart district.

Hungarian: Komjat; 596 houses.

First mentioned in the year 1475 as Komyath. It then became part of the Herrschaft (fief) of Buchenschachen in possession of the Kaldy family. In 1574 it was taken over by the Batthyany. In 1750 by Baumkirchner of Schlaining. Later it became independent.

A Lutheran site during the Reformation (you'll find both Catholics and Lutherans). Both churches are there today, the Catholic, (Heilige Nikolaus) built 1797, present Lutheran 1967 (was a school).

Johann Mhl (1866-1942) was Bergermeister from 1931-37, Johann Mhl, Landwirt (farmer) (1912-1990 from 1951-58 and Josef Mhl (1933) from 1980-1992. Many families named Mhl in this village.

It's possible that these sponsors were relatives, or could have been just close friends. It would be interesting to see how many people were sponsored by the same person.**

  • The names above without birth or death dates are listed as a parent of a child born/baptized in Kemeten. No dates were given on these records other than the date of the child, so it's hard to tell how many children these parents had.
  • Another complication was that the spelling of the names of the parents often changed.
  • In conclusion, the table above could have duplicates of the same person, and this is probably an incomplete list but comes from the records that I've found so far.
